Red and green are traditionally ‘Christmas colors,’ and I’ve been intrigued by the idea of presenting these complementary colors in non-holiday contexts. This painting started with the ribbon.  I wanted to paint ribbon because I love the way the light is reflected as it bends and curves, bringing out subtle differences in the color.  Rounded fruit seemed a perfect complement for curvy ribbon pieces; this is a red plum. I remember visiting a farmer’s market store and being immediately drawn to these gorgeous red things that were not apples.  In contrast with the deep red-violet ‘black’ plums, these had an almost translucent quality. Putting one next to this rich cool green ribbon, I knew I had to paint them.
